Wind Power
People have been using wind power for centuries, principally to power ships, grind grain and pump water.
In the late 19th century, people bagan to use wind turbines to generate electricity.
Not all locations are suitable for generation of electricity using the wind.
Wind strength varies from place to place and is also variable over time.
Because of wind's variability it is necessary to augment wind generated electricity with some other source or to provide some sort of storage.
The most visible activity is the construction of large turbines with capacities in the megawatt range.
However smaller turbines with capacities up to 50 kilowatts can be used to supply smaller loads.
In some jurisdictions utility companies are required to buy any surplus energy generated, providing supplemental capacity for calm days and eliminating the need for storage
