If We Caused Global Warming, We Can Stop It
BP Oil Spill
June 8, 2010
This may be somewhat off subject in a website addressing global warming; but:
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 80% of pollution in the ocean comes from land based sources. In the case of oil these sources include oil washed off roadways and dumped down drains. This oil flows into rivers and eventually ends up in the ocean. Another source of oil in the ocean is waste intentionally dumped into rivers by industrial enterprises. Twice as much oil ends up in the ocean each year from gasoline stations as from tanker accidents.
Segway to the subject of tankers; much more oil enters the ocean every year from tanker accidents than from drilling accidents and even more oil is dumped into the ocean on purpose during ship cleaning operations.
This is not an attempt to minimize the scope of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill or to downplay British Petroleum's culpability in this matter. It is, rather,
an attempt to show that our problems are much greater than the current disaster.
