Hydrogen Power
Hydrogen gas can be produced by subjecting fossil fuels to high temperature and pressure, by subjecting water to high temperatures or by electrolysis of water.
Most of the hydrogen used in the United States today is produced by using natural gas.
One of the waste products of producing hydrogen in this way is carbon dioxide.
Producing hydrogen using either method involving water requires an energy source.
One energy source which could be used is solar, either by directly heating the water or by generating electricity to produce hydrogen by electrolysis.
Wind energy could also be used to produce electricity and generate hydrogen using electrolysis.
In the future, nuclear power plants might produce enough heat to extract hydrogen from water.
The main problem with hydrogen as a transportation fuel is storage.
At normal temperature and pressure hydrogen gas is not dense enough to be used as a transportation fuel.
Its density can be increased by converting it to a liquid. To do this it must be cooled to near absolute zero and an extremely heavy and bulky tank is required.
Another way to increase hydrogen's density is by compressing it at high pressure.
Currently, this is the most viable solution, although a large heavy tank is still required and the danger in a collision seems obvious.
There are compounds which can absorb and store hydrogen at room temperature and pressure and release them when required.
Research is underway to discover new materials but all of the compounds currently available require large heavy tanks.
Another problem with hydrogen fuel is that there is no distribution network for it, so no way to "gas up."
Distribution is made difficult by the fact that hydrogen can cause embrittlement of steels and other metals.
Also there won't be a distribution system until many, many folks have hydrogen vehicles. Kinda a chicken and egg thing.
The obvious solution to these problems is to generate the hydrogen where its needed, ie: a fueling station with a photovoltaic array on the roof generating hydrogen using electrolysis.
